Bailey Island
Bailey Island (located in the town of Harpswell) is a pleasant day trip to take from Portland. The picturesque and quaint island is located in Casco Bay. From Brunswick (home of Bowdoin College) on the mainland, one takes State Route 24 through Sebascodegan Island and Orr's Island to Bailey Island. Bailey Island is connected to Orr's Island by the only cribstone bridge in the world. This bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places. Granite slabs were laid horizontally, alternating lengthwise and crosswise between rows. No mortar or cement was used during the construction process. The bridge carries Route 24 (the island's main road) onto Bailey Island.
The Giant's Stairs is a cool rock formation that resembles a giant staircase leading down to the ocean at the end of the island. It has a relatively easy hiking trail that can be accessed via Washington Avenue off Route 24. The waves crash over the lower rocks and great views of the ocean are available in every direction. Please be careful -- the rocks can be slippery!
Mackerel Cove is another picturesque spot on Bailey Island. Numerous lobster boats are usually docked there and it is an often-photographed place because of its beauty and Maine charm. The best views of the Cove are from Abner Point Road, off Route 24.
Driftwood Inn is a nice place to stay that offers rooms and cabins. It is located right on the ocean and offers traditional coastal Maine architecture and spectacular views.

Land's End Gift Shop is located at the end of Route 24; the road comes to an abrupt end at a place where you can walk out on the rocks and see the cove. Again, please be careful on the rocks -- they can become slippery! The gift shop offers local clothing items and memorabilia.
